Metallica is great at heavy metal but even better at making money.
For anyone wondering why the band's WorldWired tour was continuing through a third year, the new report from Boxscore contains all you need to know.
The Bay Area-thrash titans raked in $70 million this summer in just 13 European concerts with Ghost serving as main support.
The shows were attended by nearly 700,000 fans total, with a nightly average of over 53,000 in attendance. The band's July 16 concert in Finland drew more than 55,000, about 1 percent of that country's population.
But Finland wasn't even the biggest gig! Metallica drew 71,122 fans at a show in Slane, Ireland, earning more than $8 million in the process.
Earlier this year, drummer Lars Ulrich revealed that the band has for years been doing much more at every tour stop than rocking and leaving. Ulrich says the band makes contributions to local food pantries and homeless charities in every city it visits. Last year, the band began publicizing its humanitarian efforts in hopes of encouraging activism in its massive fanbase.
Metallica is headed back overseas this month for a few more shows in northern Europe. September 6 and 8, the band will play its lone remaining U.S. concerts of the year, backed by a symphony orchestra in San Francisco.
